Professor Richard Stanton: Overcoming viral manipulation and evasion of cellular immunity with SARS-CoV-2 and HCMV

Abstract:

Our research sits at the interface of virology and immunology, with a particular focus on the ways that viruses manipulate the infected cell to avoid recognition by cellular immunity (including NK cells, T-cells, and dendritic cells), and how these mechanisms can be overcome to promote more effective antiviral immunity. Most recently we have been working with human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and SARS-CoV-2 to investigate the role of antibody-mediated activation of cellular immunity in viral control, and how this can be enhanced in immunotherapies and vaccines. We've also used quantitative proteomics to reveal novel ways that these viruses manipulate protein trafficking to provide protection from these responses.
