Can I apply even if I have not received my degree yet?
You do not need to have completed your degree program at the time of application. However, you must have completed your studies and have received your qualifying degree before you start your doctorate at LIV.
What is the working language at LIV?
English is most commonly used across sites in the everyday working environment.
Do I have to provide GRE, IELTS or TOEFL scores?
No. We do not require any, but would like to point out that proficiency in English, both written and verbal, is a prerequisite to enter the LIV Graduate School.
How many references should I name for my application?
Your need to name at least two references in your application. We recommend that you personally contact your references before including them in your application.
Can I select a research group for my doctoral project, that is not listed as “recruiting” on the LIV webpage?
No. Please select from this list.
Should I get in touch with group leaders, I am interested in, prior to submitting my application?
No, this is not advised. However, in your cover letter you can list up to three group leaders that you are interested in. Please also explain briefly, why you find their work interesting.
I have my own funding. Does this guarantee a place in the program?
No. All applications are evaluated on basis of qualification and scientific potential. All invited candidates must successfully pass the interview procedure in order to be eligible.
Is there an age limit for applicants?
No, there is no age limit for applicants.
If I am accepted to the LIV Graduate School, when am I supposed to start with my doctoral studies?
Successful applicants can commence their doctoral studies no later than 1st of January 2024. Starting dates are decided upon in agreement with your prospective advisor.
How are the doctoral students supported financially?
Our students are on regular work contracts (TV-AVH, similar to TVöD) provided by their supervisors. The contracts come with health insurance and full social security coverage (including retirement and disability).
Are there any tuition fees for doctoral studies at the LIV?
No, there are no tuition fees. However, you will have to pay a semester fee about approx. 340 Euro (approx. 56 Euro / month; incl. semester ticket for public transport) for the duration of enrollment at the university.
Which institution will award my doctoral degree?
LIV in Hamburg does not grant doctoral degrees directly but collaborates with the regional universities, typically Universität Hamburg (dependent on the university affiliation of your thesis advisor). Within our structured PhD program, you can receive the Dr. rer. nat. or a PhD. Doctoral candidates will have to satisfy the terms of admission for doctoral theses of the respective university program they enroll.
