Thursday, 07. April 2022At its 31st annual meeting, held as a hybrid format in Munich and online, the Society for Virology (GfV) awarded the Bernhard and Ingrid Fleckenstein Foundation PhD Award to HPI alumnus Dr. Johannes Jung.
The prize, endowed with 5,000 euros, is awarded annually in recognition of a scientific or medical doctorate with a virological theme that has produced outstanding work at a research institution in the German-speaking world and has already been published or accepted for publication.
Dr. Johannes Jung has been working on his doctoral thesis in the HPI research departments of Virus Immunology under the supervision of Prof. Marcus Altfeld and Viral Transformation under the supervision of Prof. Thomas Dobner until January 2022 as part of the HPI Strategic Incentive Program (SIP). Among other things, he used a 3D organoid model of the intestine to show how natural killer (NK) cells recognize and kill intestinal epithelial cells infected with human adenoviruses (HAdV). The results were published in the journal Science Immunology in September 2021.
From 2019 to 2020, Dr. Johannes Jung also served as spokesperson for the HPI PhD students, advocating for their concerns and interests with the Scientific Council and the Board of Directors.
The HPI warmly congratulates Dr. Johannes Jung on this prestigious award and is proud of his achievements during his time at our institute.
