German Centre for Infection Research

The LIV is a founding member of the German Centre for Infection Research (DZIF) and a member of the Hamburg-Lübeck-Borstel-Riems partner site "Global and Emerging Infections" together with the Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine (BNITM), the Research Center Borstel (FZB) and research groups from the Universität Hamburg and the Universität zu Lübeck. Other DZIF partner sites are Hannover-Braunschweig, Cologne-Bonn, Gießen-Marburg-Langen, Heidelberg, Tübingen and Munich.

Overarching research projects at LIV in the following Thematic Translational Units (TTU)

TTU HIV

Prof. Marcus Altfeld, Head of the department of Virus Immunology, has been the spokesperson and coordinator of the TTU HIV since 2019. Within this TTU, the LIV is involved in the following research projects:

"Immune control of HIV-1"(joint project)
contact at LIV: Prof. Marcus Altfeld, head of the department Virus Immunology

"Reduction and elimination of HIV reservoirs"(joint project)
contact at LIV: Prof. Marcus Altfeld, head of the department Virus Immunology

DZIF Academy funded scholarships:

  • "Lymphgewebe-Organoide zur Untersuchung von Geschlechtsunterschieden bei der Größe und Charakteristik von HIV-Reservoirs" (Clinical Leave Programm)
  • "Immunkontrolle des HIV-1 Reservoirs im Gehirn durch NK-Zell-Effektorfunktionen gegen infizierte Mikroglia" (Clinical Leave Programm)
  • "Auswirkungen der Typ-I-IFN-Antwort auf die Größe des HIV-1-Reservoirs" (MD Programm)

TTU Infections of the Immunocompromised Host

TTU Overarching Projects

The bridging project "Establishment of an open source DZIF microbial cell-free DNA reference meta-database"
PI:  Prof. Adam Grundhoff (LIV), Prof. Nicole Fischer (UKE), Dr. Marc Lütgehetman (UKE) in collaboration with Heidelberg and DZIF-associated partner sites Berlin and Frankfurt

Cooperations

The LIV conducts research in cooperation with institutes of the DZIF site Hannover-Braunschweig on the projects:

  • "Broad-spectrum antivirals"
  • "Lead generation and in vivo potency testing of novel HCMV inhibitors with new modes of action"
  • "Lead Optimization of AHPs as novel CMV inhibitors"

Our institute is also collaborating with the DZIF site in Heidelberg on the project "Viral determinants of breadth and magnitude of broadly neutralizing antibody responses in HIV patients".

Promotion of young scientists

The LIV is also involved in the DZIF's Clinical Leave Program and MD/PhD program with a number of scholarships, which release young physicians from their clinical duties in favor of research activities in the field of infection and enable medical students to participate in structured doctoral programs.
