Epigenetic regulation of the X chromosome for pluripotency and in vitro oogenesis

Prof. Dr. Bernhard Payer (Department of Pathology and Cell Biology at the University of Montreal) and his research group investigate the mechanisms of epigenetic reprogramming in the context of pluripotency and germ cell development. Their work focuses particularly on the processes of X-chromosome inactivation and reactivation as classical models of epigenetic regulation. To study X-chromosome reprogramming during germ cell and oocyte development, the laboratory has developed a range of mouse and human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) reprogramming and organoid systems.
Bernhard Payer has made fundamental contributions to our understanding of the interplay between three-dimensional genome architecture, epigenetic regulation, and transcription, as well as the importance of X-chromosome remodeling for meiosis and oogenesis. More recently, his group uncovered an unexpected role for interferon signaling in enhancing pluripotency and X-chromosome reactivation during iPSC reprogramming.
