Prof. Dr. Kirsty Short (University of Queensland, Australia)

Prof. Kirsty Short is Senior Principal Research Fellow at the University of Queensland, Australia. Her research focuses on the factors that influence susceptibility to severe viral disease, including obesity, diabetes, and chronic inflammation. Her work particularly focuses on influenza and SARS-CoV-2 pathogenesis, with important contributions to our understanding of the role of endothelial cells in viral disease, immune responses to SARS-CoV-2, and the causes of long COVID. Her research has also examined the role of children in SARS-CoV-2 transmission and contributed to the scientific evidence informing pandemic policy. Supported by prestigious fellowships from the NHMRC and ARC, Prof. Short’s work combines cutting-edge virology with important real-world implications for public health. Her talk, “Post-Viral Diseases,” will explore the challenges and mechanisms underlying disease that can persist following viral infection.
