Everything prepared for the plasmid preparation
Everything prepared for the plasmid preparation

On Monday, June 27, 2022, eighteen school students of the Corvey Gymnasium received insights into virus research at the Leibniz Institute of Virology.

After a short welcome and introduction of the institute by the Scientific Director of the LIV Prof. Thomas Dobner, the students could not only observe researchers at work, but also get hands-on:

Together with the research department "Viral Transformation" they performed a plasmid preparation, digested DNA and subsequently viewed their results in an agarose gel. From the LIV technology platform "Microscopy and Image Analysis" the students got insights into the possibilities of electron microscopy. From the junior research group "Systems Arbobiology" they got a look into the possible applications of mass spectrometry and the research department "Viral Zoonoses - One Health" showed how to prepare for work in a BSL3+ laboratory with the appropriate protective clothing.
