Support for postdoctoral scientists

In addition to structured training during the doctoral phase, the LIV recognizes an increasing need for targeted support of early-career researchers in the crucial transition period following the PhD. To help navigate this pivotal stage successfully, the LIV offers comprehensive support to postdoctoral researchers:

• Soft Skills Program: In collaboration with our partner, the Hamburg Research Academy, the LIV provides funding that enables postdocs to participate in high-quality training programs—covering topics such as project management, third-party funding acquisition, career planning, and networking. These courses strengthen their professional and academic competencies for diverse career paths.
• Scientific Networking and Feedback: As part of the LIV Institute Seminar, postdoctoral researchers can present their research projects, receive constructive feedback and exchange valuable ideas. Additionally, the LIV Lecture Series enables postdocs to invite guest speakers, thereby fostering academic development and collaboration both within and outside the institute.
• LCI Postdoc Retreat: The annual two-day LCI Postdoc Retreat is jointly organized by the postdoctoral representatives of the Leibniz Centre Infection (LCI) institutes – BNITM, CSSB, FZB, and LIV. The retreat provides postdoctoral researchers with a platform for scientific exchange, interdisciplinary networking across the participating institutes, and participation in workshops and professional development activities that support their career development.
• Mentoring: The LIV actively supports female postdocs in applying for the Leibniz Mentorship Program—a highly valuable opportunity for professional and personal growth, as well as networking with experienced professionals.

Through these initiatives, the LIV strengthens the career prospects and long-term professional opportunities of its postdoctoral researchers, aiming to empower them to become competent, and well-connected scientists.
