Mission and Vision

As a Leibniz Institute, the LIV is a subject-focused research institute of national standing. The institute’s socio-political and scientific mission embodies basic and applied research in the field of human pathogenic viruses. The institute’s mission statement sets forth: "Leibniz Institute of Virology (LIV), investigates the biology of human pathogenic viruses. It is our aim to unravel the molecular mechanisms that control viral life cycles and virus induced pathogenesis. This research will provide novel targets and therapeutic approaches for established and emerging viral disease." Scientific investigations are organized into main subject areas within two program areas.

The LIV’s research units currently consist of even research departments, two research unit and three independent junior research groups and three associated groups.

Education

The promotion and training of junior scientists assumes a central role at the LIV. In addition, the LIV’s administrative department offers a three year dual training opportunity for office administration.
