Projects and Grants

Dr. Scaturro's junior research group is identifying novel antiviral pan-flavivirus inhibitors in the DZIF (German Center for Infection Research) funded PanFlavi project. It is a collaborative project with the group of Prof. Dr. med. Thomas F. Schulz (Hannover Medical School) for the high-throughput screening of antiviral substances against West Nile virus and Zika virus.

In the FlavORGa project, which is funded by the Leibniz Institute of Virology (intramural funding), Pietro Scaturro and his team are investigating cellular and viral determinants of the flavivirus replication organelle across several levels of complexity. It is a collaborative project with the department Structural Cell Biology of Viruses of Kay Grünewald (CSSB, Hamburg) to characterize flavivirus replication organelles using cryoEM methods.

The FlaviTher project, funded by the Joachim Herz Foundation, is concerned with the development of novel host-specific antiviral agents for the treatment of flavivirus infections.

The microPhos project, which is funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation), investigates trapped ion mobility-resolved mass spectrometry-based phosphoproteomics of arbovirus infection. Together with the Functional Proteomics group of Junior Professor Dr. Florian Meier-Rosar (University of Jena), high-throughput phosphoproteomics methods are established to study arbovirus infections in vitro.

ZikaVert is a DFG-funded project to identify and characterize viral and cellular determinants of Zika virus (ZIKV) vertical transmission. As a trans-national cooperation project with the Medical Biotechnology research group of Siridechadilok Bunpote, Ph.D. (National Center for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology, Thailand), the project aims to establish and characterize novel ex-vivo models of ZIKV vertical transmission using primary cell models.

The German Federal Ministry for Education and Research (BMBF) is funding the VirMScan project for mass spectrometric fast diagnostics for respiratory viruses in saliva and gargle solution as well as the development of MS-based "one-pot" diagnostic kits for simultaneous detection of multiple respiratory viruses. This is a collaborative project with the associated group Dynamics of Viral Structures led by Charlotte Uetrecht (CSSB, University of Lübeck).

With the FlaviPro project, which is funded by the Leibniz Center Infection with the LCI grant, the scientists of the Scaturro junior research group are developing a global profiling of susceptibility factors across flaviviruses in mosquitoes as well as proteomic profiling of infected mosquitoes. This project focuses on the systematic characterization of the effects of ZIKV infection on global proteostasis in different tissues of Ae. aegypti mosquitoes, the main vector of arboviruses. It is a collaborative project with the department Arbovirus and Entomology of Jonas Schmidt-Chanasit (Bernhard Nocht Institute for Tropical Medicine, Universität Hamburg).
