Viral Zoonoses - One Health

The Research Department of Viral Zoonoses - One Health, headed by Prof. Dr. Gülşah Gabriel, investigates the interspecies transmission of influenza A viruses from animals to humans and the molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis in humans, particularly with regard to risk factors (pregnancy, obesity and gender dependence).

The aim of the department is to identify and characterize viral and cellular determinants that contribute to species transition and to the increased pathogenicity and transmission of influenza viruses in humans. In addition, the transferability of these findings to other respiratory viruses, such as SARS-CoV-2 and RSV, is being investigated. In the long term, the common denominators should provide targets for therapy development.
