Virus Genomics

The Virus Genomics Research Department, headed by Prof. Dr Adam Grundhoff, investigates genetic, epigenetic and post-transcriptional regulatory mechanisms of tumourigenic herpes and polyomaviruses. Experimental infection and latency models are used in conjunction with systems biology analysis methods.

The aim of the research is to derive general principles of viral persistence and pathogenesis with the help of comparative studies, which can then be used to develop new intervention strategies. In addition, the research department uses its analytical expertise together with the associated high-throughput sequencing technology platform to investigate viral pathogens in clinical samples, for example to clarify outbreak events or to identify unknown pathogens.
